  The IGERT Vision

Michigan Technological University and Southern University have established the Sustainable Futures (SF) IGERT focused on establishing an integrated basis for decision-making to promote sustainability.

The program engages a diverse group of doctoral and master's students in an education and research training program to understand, explore, apply, and further develop the science of sustainability and Sustainable Futures Model.

The Sustainable Futures IGERT focuses on:

  • Environmental systems

  • Industrial systems

  • Societal systems

  • Integrative sustainable systems linking the first three thrust areas.

The goal of the SF IGERT is to enhance graduate education by integrating the engineering and technology of industrial ecology; the science of environmental assessment and modeling; and the economic, human behavior, and policy-making aspects of the social sciences to develop professionals knowledgeable in sustainability.

All students participating in the SF IGERT are required to take coursework in engineering, environmental science, social sciences, business, and international development and to incorporate these disciplines into their research making it a truly meta-disciplinary endeavor.

IGERT students are required to take core coursework in their chosen discipline(s) and associated coursework in other departments.
