Overview of the Area: Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana


Situated in the state capital of Baton Rouge, students have access to a thriving city that is also home to Louisiana State University. Visitors can experience the unique food, Creole culture, Cajun zest, and lively music scene that makes Baton Rouge a special place. Southern University and A&M College has an average student population of 9,000 students and is part of the only historically black Land Grant university system in the United States. It offers bachelor's degrees in 42 areas, 19 master's, two doctoral, and three associate degrees. The campus encompasses 512 acres, with an experimental station on an additional 372-acre site, located five miles north of the main campus. The Southern University and A&M College, Baton Rouge campus, is one of the most beautiful campuses in the South. Lake Kernan flows through the center of campus and the Mississippi River forms its western boundary.

Southern University is situated in an area that has a semi-tropical climate; therefore, it is a perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities. Weather is warm from May to September and the winter is typically mild. The average annual temperature is 68 degrees and the average annual precipitation is 55 inches.



The Smith-Brown Memorial Union is a 66,200-square feet multipurpose building which serves as a major center for extracurricular activities and is known on campus as the “living room.” The Union features a food court with more than eight popular food outlets; barber and beauty shops; television rooms; 12 bowling lanes; a game room for billiards; and an art gallery. The John B. Cade Library’s collection totals more than one million volumes. Special collections include the Camille Shade African-American Collection, archives, music, art, and architecture. The library is a partial depository for Louisiana and U.S. Government Documents.


The Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs provides programs that enable undergraduate and graduate students to understand major social, political and economic developments in society. These programs familiarize students with the values associated with positive and effective leadership in a democratic society, and provide a framework for lifelong personal and professional growth. The School's newest program, the Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy, not only supports the University's historical mission to prepare and train outstanding African-American scholars, professionals and citizens, but explicitly broadens that mission by actively seeking outstanding graduate students of other races

A wide variety of sporting activities are also available. Southern University competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in sports such as football, baseball, men's and women's basketball, and women's volleyball.
