Our primary objective in conducting a summer research program for undergraduate students is to expose students to the opportunities, challenges and rewards of conducting research. This 10-week program will allow you to:

  • Understand the importance and significance of research for addressing sustainability problems.
  • Learn the steps of the scientific research process.
  • Acquire an understanding of the Sustainable Futures Model and the complex interrelationships among industrial, societal and environmental sustainability.
  • Design and carry out independent team research projects under faculty mentorship.
  • Learn to more effectively communicate research findings to a variety of audiences.
  • Develop professional and social relationships that bridge cultural (ethnic, geographic, academic) differences and that will prepare you to work collaboratively as part of interdisciplinary teams.
  • Explore opportunities for graduate research.
  • Investigate career opportunities in the broad field of sustainability.

What else will you gain? Lots!
• A great experience that you can put on your résumé
• Knowledge on how to use state-of-the art analytical equipment
• Research, writing and presentation skills
• The chance to interact with students from other universities
• Financial compensation
• The chance to explore beautiful upper Michigan or Louisiana

Research Environment
We will select eight undergraduate students to conduct research at Michigan Tech, and eight undergraduate students to conduct research at Southern. During the ten-week summer session, each student will work collaboratively with a faculty and graduate students on an interdisciplinary research project.

Teams of students will explore topics together.
Students will work approximately 40 hours per week on their individual research projects. In addition to research, there will be weekly seminars and workshops to provide students with the tools needed to complete their projects. At the conclusion of the summer session, students will present their final work at a symposium in the main campus center at both campuses.

Leisure Environment
As part of the REU program, you’ll have plenty of time to participate in fun activities in Houghton or Baton Rouge.
