Organizational
Structure
Dr.
James R. Mihelcic serves as the director of the REU in
Sustainability and is responsible for the overall management and
final decision-making of the Project.
Dr. Mihelcic is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering
at Michigan Technological University (Houghton, Michigan) and co-directs
the Sustainable Futures Institute. He also directs the Master’s
International program in Civil & Environmental Engineering that
allows students to combine graduate school with engineering service
in the U.S. Peace Corps. Additional information on both efforts

Dr. Mihelcic
has worked with several pre-college teachers to develop a middle
school curriculum related to energy and pollution prevention. He
is currently an elected member of the Board of Directors of the
Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors
(AEESP) and is a past recipient of the AEESP-Wiley Interscience
Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Engineering
& Science Education. He is also the lead author of the textbook
Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering (John Wiley &
Sons, 1999) that has been translated into Spanish as Fundamentos
de Ingenieria Ambiental (Limusa Wiley, 2001).
Dr. Mihelcic
has studied environmental policy as an AAAS-U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency Environmental Fellow and is currently writing a book titled
“Sustainable Development Engineering: Engineering appropriate
solutions for the developing world.”
Ms.
Shalini Suryanarayana is the Director of MTU Special Academic
Programs, and the Associate Director of the Educational Opportunity
Department (http://www.edopp.mtu.edu/).
She oversees life-long learning activities from pre-college academic
youth programs to Elderhostels for people over age 55. In addition,
she coordinates the MTU Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
(SURF) program and the National Student Exchange Program. She represents
Michigan Tech in several national professional organizations, including
the Women in Engineering Program Advocates Network (WEPAN), the
National Association of Minority Engineering Program Administrators
(NAMEPA), and MentorNET.
Shalini serves
as the chair of the all-volunteer Environmental Sustainability Committee
(ESC, http://www.esc.mtu.edu/)
comprised of faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students.
She is the advisor to several student groups, including Students for
Environmental Sustainability and the Green Eating Group.
Dr.
Ron Harris is the Director of the Public Policy Ph.D. program
within the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs
at Southern University and A&M College. His research interests are
in the areas of sustainability, American political institutions,
public policy, issues of environmental justice, and political economy.
He is a co-PI on an National Science Foundation Integrative Graduate
Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grant that has the purpose
of integrating the three pillars of sustainability (environment,
economy/industry, and society) into an interdisciplinary doctoral
program.
