REU Project

We are working towards evaluating environmental justice issues in St. James Parish, Louisiana. This Parish is heavily populated by minorities, is one of the most polluted areas in the United States, and is often referred to as “Cancer Alley.” We are using GIS to create maps that show the correlations between the location of the manufacturing facilities in the Parish and demographic variables such as race, income, and education. Also, we are evaluating what citizens in the area have done to protect themselves from being adversely affected by the pollution and which plan of action is the most effective.

Personal Information

This fall I will begin my junior year at Guilford College. I am originally from Blackwood, New Jersey. At Guilford, I am working towards campus sustainability as a member of our environmental club, Forevergreen. Last summer I studied abroad with the School for Field Studies in Atenas, Costa Rica and conducted research on sustainable tropical ecosystems. This past year I did an independent study to research erosion at Guilford College using GIS and presented a poster of my research at the North Carolina Academy of Science annual conference.
When I’m not working, I like to do anything that involves being outside and traveling. I love to go camping, especially at music festivals. Concerts take up a ridiculous amount of my time and money. Also, I love to make things. I enjoy sewing clothes, making jewelry, painting, ceramics, and building anything that involves nails and a hammer.
