There are many different types of transportation fuels. The most common are: gasoline and diesel fuel. Both are liquid fuels made from oil (petroleum). Fossil fuels account for 90% of all transportation fuel use.

Coal, natural gas, electricity, methane, water and alcohols like ethanol can also be used to produce transportation fuels. Ethanol fuels are made from biomass.
