Detroit Natural Areas ~ Teacher Workshop

8: 45 am          Continental breakfast at Detroit River Walk.
                        (Meet at Rivard & Atwater entrance to Milliken State Park, just east of Renaissance Center, Detroit.      

9:00 am           Tour of Milliken State Park and Harbor with Ranger Steve Brock, MI Dept of Natural Resources
As the first urban park in Michigan, William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor (formerly Tri-Centennial Park) offers 31 acres carved out on the banks of the Detroit River will offer a green oasis in the midst of downtown Detroit.  http://www.detroitriverfront.org/east/tricentennialpark/

  1. How can teachers use this resource to teach Environmental Education?

10:15 am         Depart for Belle Isle Park Fishing Pier (South) near Belle Isle Coast Guard Station

10:30 am         Rehabilitation of Belle Isle Lakes & Canals - update & discussion on how Belle Isle's newest                                 restoration projects can provide outdoor classroom experiences for your students.
                        (Gary Crawford, JJR Incorporated, lead scientist on the project)

12:45 pm         Lunch at Belle Isle White House.
                        Meet with Keith Flournoy, Belle Isle Park Manager, City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Dept.

1:45 pm            Discussion on field trip opportunities for classes to visit Belle Isle and how you and your students can participate in hands-on restoration projects such as Canada goose egg round up and Conservation Stewardship projects right here in Detroit.

2:45 pm           Workshop wrap-up & evaluations
