Almost half (48%) of all greenhouse gas emissions can be attributed to the building sector, with 40 % resulting from building operations i.e., heating, lighting, etc., the remaining 8% coming from the production of building materials and the construction process.  In light of the large building sector contribution, significant reduction in greenhouse emissions could be achieved utilizing sustainable construction practices.    Take this course as a primer on sustainable construction

USGBC Workshop ® May 7
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Technical Review Workshop for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC).  A LEED Accredited Professional from USGBC will conduct a private workshop at Michigan Tech designed to provide exposure to the LEED rating systems and their application.  Topics covered: This workshop is a detailed exploration of LEED for new construction. You'll acquire the basic tools and insights you need to incorporate green building into your work, including examples of successful strategies for each credit.

CE4990 Green Building Design ® May 7-11
Day 1 of this 3-credit course would be the USGBC Workshop.  Days 2 through 5 will include: hands on practice in utilizing the LEED-NC system for evaluating building performance; an exploration of construction techniques utilized with sustainable buildings; discussions and practice on topics covered in the LEED-NC Accredited Professional Exam; and evaluation and tours of local sustainable buildings.
This course is eligible for technical elective credits in the Construction Management Program.
Course prerequisite – junior standing or higher.

Registration
Individuals may elect to take the one-day workshop or the 3-credit course.
USGBC Workshop - Fee $300
The workshop is open to anyone.  To register for the workshop, a $100 non-refundable deposit is required by March 30 with final payment due by April 30.  Makes checks payable to CEE Department and note on check “US GBC Workshop”.  If enrollment cap is reached, MTU students, faculty, and staff will be given precedence.
CE4990 Green Building Design – 3 credits
USGBC Workshop registration + CE4990 Green Building Design (3 credits)
$300 registration fee (paid as described under USGBC Workshop above) + Standard tuition for 3 credits.
Students must sign up by April 23 at the registrar’s office.
