A postdoctoral position is available immediately for a highly motivated individual with an interest in design and manufacturing for sustainability.  The position is housed in the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering – Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Tech. The successful candidate will work with graduate scholars and other personnel participating in the Sustainable Futures Institute (www.sfi.mtu.edu). The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about sustainability principles, have excellent communication skills, and have authored publications related to design and manufacturing for sustainability; a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline is a requirement for the position.

The successful candidate will be involved in the preparation of proposals and papers, serve as a mentor to graduate students, and assist with all activities of Dr. Sutherland's research program. The postdoctoral researcher will be engaged in the following areas:

  • Development of software tools to support product and process design for sustainability;
    Greening of manufacturing processes;
  • Air quality issues related to manufacturing, with specific application to micro- and nano-processing;
  • Life-cycle assessment;
  • Reduced energy logistics including those that support cellulose to ethanol conversion;
  • Material flow and economic exchange models to assess environmental and economic effects;
  • Servicizing of products as a strategy to achieve dematerialization;
  • Characterizing the social dimension of sustainability, and strategies/policies to achieve improved conditions for people in the developing and industrialized worlds; and
  • Product end-of-use value recovery, takeback/reverse logistics, disassembly, and remanufacturing;

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
